I had a bunch of end mills that needed sharpening. I did a search on the internet and found a few companies that sharpened end mills. I contacted the different companies and eventually decided to give Gruschow Grinding a try. I sent some end mills to Brian at Gruschow Grinding to be sharpened. The end mills came back very sharp.

I'm thinking this process is often done with a thin cutoff disk since it doesn't appear nearly as finished as the relief behind the cutting edge. Here's a picture of a 4-flute mill for reference. The gash I'm referring to is just to the right of the arrow labeled "end teeth". Any suggestions as to what tool to use would be appreciated.

Sharpening the ends of end mills is very easy. It is ground like a drill is..... A primary angle usually about 7 degrees..... A secondary angle for clearance. The big difference is, the ends of the flutes are ground to a 2 degree angle to "dish" . This is so the corners of the flutes cut and the center does not rub.

A Complete Course" by Harold Hall. It is part of the 'Workshop Series' and is available on Amazon and a few other places. In that book he has plans for a sharpening system that will allow you to sharpen your own end mills. I don't know if it allows sharpening only the ends, or if it sharpens the sides too.

I just bought an arc eurotrade EMG-12 end mill sharpener, not cheap, but I get my HSS end mills second hand on ebay, and it does a good job, even with ones previously hand sharpened, it doesnt do the side flutes, just the ends, and it certainly isnt cheap, but I managed to get a complete one on ebay under £500, I know I could buy a lot of end ...

Many times an end mill only needs the ends touched up to be as good as new and this fixture makes it easy to do. NOTE: some of you may notice the hex head bolt to lock the spindle. It won't be a problem as I only hand tighten this lock. when I get my hands on a piece of 3/4" brass rod about 1 1/2" long, I will probably make a fancy lock screw ...

The Darex and Cuttermaster are 2 of the smaller benchtop machines that can still be very expensive even used, and are almost solely limited to end mill sharpening only. The larger floor standing machines can at least do a few other grinding operations, but are almost useless with out the many attachments that are needed to accomplish!

The original Deckel style collets are small and expensive and it is called a d bit grinder which is different than an end mill. I love my U2 R8 grinder because like pontiac428 it is indispensable at resharpening end mills, making special cutting tools and resharpening drill bits.
